Soi Thai Restaurant @ The Waterfront, Desa Park City

It is my virgin visit to Desa Parkcity, where I find lush greenery with lake and playground, simply good for jogging! I am so determined to lose some calories there until I notice lots of good eateries there... oh the diet plan has now gone.

There I discover Chatime, kopitiam, steamboat, japanese and most excitingly, Thai food! You must be wondering, out of so many, why Thai? Simply because it is so noticable and crowded during dinner hours. I'm thinking it must be an ideal venue for authentic, fairly valued Thai fare.

The entrance is slightly influenced by the traditional Chinese architecture, but I'm welcomed with its contemporary interior behind the doors.

Under the very relaxing atmosphere, I notice some quirky touches like miniature Buddha and elephants decor standing by the colorful seats. So cute!

First opened its door in December 2011, Soi Thai has been surprising patrons with new menu and promotions from time to time. Flipping through the menu, I feel as if I am back to my vacation days in Thailand, reading through the many familiar names of Thai signature dishes!

#1 Soi Thai Appetizer Combo

That evening I'm fortunate to sample almost all the tasty, exotic Thai dishes and delicacies. We begin with a medley of appetizers. My favourite fried fish cakes are crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. A dip into the sauce adds a twist of sweet spiciness, simply irresistible!

#2 Green Papaya Salad with Dried Shrimps and Peanuts

However, the next appetizer is not as fulfilling. It tastes slightly milder than what I've expected, not as tantalizingly tangy but I have no complaints on the generous portion.

#3 Thai Style Homemade Otak-Otak

There goes the Master Chef's signature dish, which comes in a trio with a bed of salad. As someone at our table puts it, it tastes like one of the richest otak-otak he has ever eaten!

#4 Thai Pandan Leaves Chicken

For this piece of mildly spicy chicken wrapped in screwpine leaves, it is only as good as what it is cooked with. The chicken meat maintains the moisture within and is almost perfect with the fragrance.

#5 Thai Green Curry Chicken

While enjoying the sides, the mains we order are slowly lining out from the kitchen. Such a creamy and succulent combination of chicken slices and brinjals keeps me reaching for more. Soft, smooth and tender meat tastes great when touched by the very mild, sweet green curry.

 #6 Thai Red Curry Duck

Instead of chicken, this Thai red curry comprises mainly of roasted duck. Seeing the duck slices layered with brown skin and thin fat, my mouth waters with longing, and I haven't even taken a bite yet. The generous duck pieces are tender in a mildly spicy basil and lemongrass-infused gravy.

#7 Signature Fire Pot with Seafood Tom Yam

When our appetite is less than ample, there is the signature Fire Pot, a large steaming hot pot with rich seafood assortments that boast the goodness of the tom yam soup base. The seafood is fresh, and the broth's consistency is just right, neither too watery nor thick.

#8 Deep Fried Garoupa with Sweet Thai Chilli Sauce

Next, we come about another dish which most families call it their favourite. Pretty similar to the Chinese styled sour and spicy fish, the fresh garoupa goes perfectly with the warm and fluffy Thai white rice.

#9 Thai Curry Choo Chee Fish

Next, the Choo Chee Fish, recommended by the affable waiter, arrives. I learn that Thai curry has more than just between red and green, there is Choo Chee curry as well! What a delicious dish: Spicy red curry with a burst of distinctive flavours from the kaffir lime leaves.

#10 Steamed Sweet Banana topped with Vanilla Ice Cream

For desserts, we have almost 10 choices from the menu, and it's hard to decide upon ordering. Sampling all the recommended desserts, we didn't realize that we actually end up getting more desserts than the main courses!

#11 Mango Sticky Rice topped with Coconut Milk

A must-try classic Thai dessert like mango sticky rice is simple yet mouth-watering. What's better than to enjoy the sweet fruit cuts with a dip of sweet salty coconut milk? :)

#12 Sweet Tapioca in Coconut Milk

My friend next to me enjoys this very much because the slow-cooked tapioca is really soft and goes well with the thick coconut milk. However, it can be a winning taste if it goes lighter on the sweetness.

#13 Sweet Pumpkin in Coconut Milk

#14 Coconut and Lemongrass Jelly with Passion Fruit

The two distinctive layers of jelly give a blend of light, refreshing taste. Not cloying at all!

#15 Black Glutinous Rice in Coconut Milk

This sticky rice is more of dark purple than black, so compact yet soft. To my personal taste, I'm amazed at the unique taste of the naturally sweet rice in combination with the coconut milk. It tastes even better than the mango sticky rice, so enjoyable yet guilt-free!

#16 Water Chestnuts and Jackfruits in Coconut Milk

To ger the complete Thai experience at Soi, one can't go wrong with this signature dessert. Oh I'm eyeing on the red ruby crowning on the bed of crushed ice and coconut milk. Giving a very chewy texture, the shredded jackfruits and jellied water chestnut balance up the sweet dessert.

#17 Young Coconut and Thai Style Three Layers Iced Tea

After a satisfying heavy meal, I wash it down with some cooling coconut water while my dining companion opts for the famous Thai Iced Tea, a glassful distinctively layered with black tea, sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk. Quite pale-looking but very flavourful.

#18 Lemongrass and Pandan Cooler

#19 Master Chef Suwit

Credits to the Thai chef for his great work which keeps my stomach occupied with so many good food.

#20 Elephant Cutlery

Verdict:
1. Out of the 5 mains, it is tough to vote for the best one. They're so yummy that I have no complaints at all!
2. Recommended: Signature Fire Pot with Seafood Tom Yam, Thai Style Homemade Otak-Otak, and Thai Red Curry Duck
3. Delicious and reasonably priced, Soi makes an ideal venue especially for family gatherings.

  9. I'm not very familiar with Thai food at the level that the restaurant served so all of the mains were a revelation. I'm having problems figuring out what otak-otak is from the picture so if you want to go into more detail, it would be welcome. And none of the fish you mention nor the preparation are something I've run across here in Canada. The only let down for me would be the desserts.

I would probably have made a meal out of the appetizers served. They were that appealing. I just wish I knew what they were. :)

Looks like I'll have to track SOME of them down.
