After a long shopping day, foodies brought me for some feast on authentic Indonesian cuisine. I have always thought Indonesian food is similar to our Malaysian Nasi Lemak and Malay cuisine, but stepping into Ayam Penyet Ria at The Summit USJ Mall has proven me wrong.
Originated from Batam, Indonesia, Ayam Penyet is a traditional, famous 'smashed marinated fried chicken'. The recipe is then perfected by a well-known traditional Indonesian culinary expert, Ibu Ruth.
BEVERAGES
#1
Left: Teh Botol Sosro @ RM2.50
Middle: Tebs (Teh Botol Soda) @ RM3.50
Right: Cucumber Juice @ RM3.90
& Kedondong Juice @ RM5.90
My first experience of an Indonesian affair is completed with the famous Teh Botol, which is Jasmine Tea, a packet drinks exclusively imported from Indonesia. Surprisingly I find it rather bland despite of its strong, robust jasmine scent.
APPETIZER
#2 Gado-Gado @ RM5.50
More commonly termed as Indonesian Salad, it is a platter of tapioca crackers on a bed of freshly-boiled vegetables, in a thick dip of sweet peanut sauce. The best part here is Ayam Penyet Ria's signature eye-popping spicy chilli sambal! Fiery red in color, its level of spiciness makes me sweat yet wanting for more!
SOUP
#3 Bakso Kuah @ RM5.90
For beef fans, make sure this bouncy meatball soup is in your order list. Our meaty portion is very chewy and scrumptious with a nice peppery, garlicky tinge.
#4 Soto Ayam @ RM5.90
This Javanese chicken soup with glass noodle is so warm and comforting for me after a cold, raining day. The rich brownish broth serves as a great alternative for those with small appetite.
#5 Sup Ekor Lembu @ RM10.90
Then we go for some kampung-styled oxtail soup, a rich but clear broth of fried oxtail with vegetables. The well-seasoned oxtail is simply good to go with sambal and lime juice.
MAIN PENYET SET
Each set contains:
1 main penyet
1 nasi putih
1 mini sup
1 mini keropok buah
#6 Ayam Penyet Set @ RM12.50
The best selling dish is of course the mashed chicken at Ayam Penyet Ria! I love how well the aromatics' blend of herbs and spices enhance the taste of village chicken.
#7 Iga Penyet Set @ RM16.90
Another distinct offering is squashed beef ribs, although the ribs don't look smashed of mangled here. It is soft and tasty, so tender that it can leave the bones easily. Must try!
#8 Lele Penyet Set @ RM11.50
I find the fish not as meaty, but nevertheless very filling with generous portion of fried tofu, tempe (Fermented Soy Beans), vegetables as well as sambal. I especially enjoy the crispy skin of the fish, bursting with spiced flavours!
#9 Udang Penyet Set @ RM12.50
The quality of the prawns here is good, simply huge and fresh. I can hardly finish 5 big prawns all by myself but if you're a prawn lover, you'd be overwhelmed!
ADD ON
#10 Rendang Daging @ RM5.90
1. Tastewise, most items are served fresh, hot and crispy. And the chilli paste is slightly toned down, suitable for our local flavours!
2. Recommended: Ayam Penyet Set, Iga Penyet Set and Gado-gado
3. Pricewise, it is really a good bargain for some casual Indonesian cuisine in town.Ayam Penyet Ria

ReplyDeleteI dunno whether should try such a place because I seriously believe dishes like ayam penyet should be tasted at those local Malay shops instead of a restaurant like this.
