True to its name, Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant features a treasure trove of gems. This year's Mid-Autumn Festival is never the same with their new special fruity mooncakes.
The mooncakes are available in beautifully crafted gift boxes of four or eight pieces that makes wonderful gifts for this special festival.
One has told me, "You are growing up if you start to love this flavour!" I used to dislike the stickiness but here it is more crunchy and not sticky at all. On top of that, nuts play a great role in bringing health benefits.
Silver leaf ceilings, magnificent chandeliers, ebony doors and artifacts of wine jars complements the décor and traditional Cantonese cuisine of the restaurant. Complementing the mooncakes, we are blessed with a complete Chinese dining at Zuan Yuan.
On a healthy side of the menu we have the soft bean curd in crispy skin topped with "Suet Choy". The tofu itself is of melting goodness, and just nice when paired with hot braised sauce. Simply an ultimate comfort home-cooked food!

MINI SNOW SKIN MOONCAKE
@ RM10 each
#1 Honey Dew Paste (Green)
钻苑迷你冰皮蜜瓜月饼 (青色)
Orange Flavour
钻苑迷你冰皮蜜瓜月饼 (橙色)
Black Sesame Paste
钻苑迷你冰皮黑芝麻月饼 (黑色)
The new snowskin mooncakes now come in bite-size so that you can have as much or as little as your desire. My favourite is honeydew, so refreshing and surprisingly rich in fruity scent as if I'm taking the real fruit!
BAKED MOONCAKE
#2 Sweetened Red Bean and Green Tea Paste @ RM20
(钻苑蜜豆绿茶月饼)
I personally prefer traditional oven-baked mooncakes to snow skin, and the combination of red bean and green tea is mildly sweet with the barest hint of bitterness. I love the chunky bits in it, enveloped in a thin layer of skin.
#3 White Coffee Lotus Paste with Walnut @ RM20
(钻苑核桃白咖啡月饼)
Zuan Yuan has successfully transformed my daily dose of coffee into a dessert! The blend of white coffee is delicious with a nice aroma and creamy texture.
#4 White Lotus Paste with Single Egg Yolk @ RM20
(钻苑单黄白莲蓉月饼)
Back to the tradition, who doesn't love the perennial flavour of this oven-baked mooncake?
#5 Supreme Mixed Nuts @ RM21
(钻苑伍仁月饼)
SNOW SKIN MOONCAKE
#6 Red Bean Paste with Pumpkin Seed @ RM15
(钻苑冰皮瓜仁红豆沙月饼)
Another stellar mooncake is the basic red bean. Don't belittle this because it leaves me speechless with its melt-in-the-mouth texture when paired with the chilling snow skin.
#7 Assorted Mooncakes
Silver leaf ceilings, magnificent chandeliers, ebony doors and artifacts of wine jars complements the décor and traditional Cantonese cuisine of the restaurant. Complementing the mooncakes, we are blessed with a complete Chinese dining at Zuan Yuan.
#8 Honey Glazed Boneless Chicken Topped with Crispy Ginger Flakes
One of the notable main dishes is Honey Glazed Chicken, a tender boneless chicken platter that is evenly coated with dark honey sauce before it is glazed into juicy perfection. The chicken has caramelized savoury sweet flavour, with a nice, gingery tinge.
#9 Braised Homemade Layered Bean Curd with
Shimeji Mushroom and Preserved Vegetables
On a healthy side of the menu we have the soft bean curd in crispy skin topped with "Suet Choy". The tofu itself is of melting goodness, and just nice when paired with hot braised sauce. Simply an ultimate comfort home-cooked food!
#10 Sauteed Eggplant with Fried Garlic, Dried Shrimp and Basil
#11 Wintermelon Soup with Red Dates
#12 Wok-Fried Ying Yang Rice with Vietnam Crispy Rice, Diced Chicken and Vegetable
As I observe the dish properly, I'm surprised that it is not just plain fried rice with condiments. One thing to make it stand out is the bits of translucent crispy rice, which makes the rice more crunchy and lively than ever.
#13 Wok-Fried Glass Vermicelli with Diced Shrimp, Shredded Chicken and Vegetable
As for the noodles, I find it quite bland despite of it being concocted with seafood, poultry and vegetables. But it is then balanced-up with Zuan Yuan's special sambal paste which is spicy with a sweet finish.
#14 Jelly
We have duo desserts during the evening, one is chilling jelly with condiments while another is a whole basket of mooncakes! If you're looking for something more traditional, Zuan Yuan offers the Deep-Fried Teo Chew Yam Paste with Single Yolk Mooncake (钻苑潮州单黄月饼 @ RM20) as well!

Verdict:
1. Generally no complaints for the taste of the premium-quality mooncakes. It falls under the not-so-sweet type, so it suits my liking.
2. Recommended: Honey Dew Snow Skin Mooncake, White Coffee Lotus Paste with Walnut Mooncake and Honey Glazed Boneless Chicken Topped with Crispy Ginger Flakes 3. Pricewise, it is more towards the mid-range mooncakes; Worth a try for their new flavours.
